Dr Terrance Drew, Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis opened the two day Global Sustainable Island Summit. The 3rd edition of the summit, which is being hosted at the federation and welcomes attendants from all over the region.
The Prime Minister took the opportunity to advocate for the Small Island States to have a voice in the international community. The small island nations are most adversely affected by crisis like climate change.
In light of the scope of this crisis, the Prime Minister highlighted that they must raise their voice in the international community. Notably, St Kitts and Nevis is steadily moving towards becoming a sustainable island nation with the help of various initiatives.
In his keynote address at the opening ceremony for Global Sustainable Island Summit, Prime Minister Drew spoke about the steps that St Kitts and Nevis has taken in order to become a Sustainable Island State. Drew talked about the country’s approach to clean energy, smart infrastructure, sustainable agriculture.
In the same address, Prime Minister also spoke about the importance of education for sustainability. Prime Minister opened his address with the words, “we small but we Talawah.
His opening words are proof of the resilience of the island nation. He highlighted that the vision for sustainable island state is moving steadily. The leader said that St Kitts and Nevis has a vision for the crisis that they are dealing with.
The Prime Minister said that the summit serves as a clarion call for the islands to rethink, reforge our shared destiny as island nations facing common challenges. All the island nations are modest and small in terms of landmass, but these islands are equally important.
In light of this, the Global Sustainable Island Summit should serve as a platform for major actions, which will positively impact the development of the island. The Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew highlighted that in the last two and half years, the island nation has seen significant development.
He applauded the progress that the federation has seen with respect to the Geothermal Energy. The Prime Minister highlighted that St Kitts and Nevis is setting an example for the rest of the world.
He hoped that the two-day Global Sustainable Island Summit will serve as platform for discussions, debates and conversations that can change the future of island nations across the world
