Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew has announced a significant investment that his administration has made in healthcare. The officials have shared that the members of the community have benefitted significantly from the inclusion of a modern fleet of ambulances.
Dr Drew says that the Ministry of Health has invested more than EC$2 million into procuring the new ambulances. He has also added that the vehicles have proven highly significant to provide adequate healthcare to the people of the country.
Dr Drew said that the investment of EC$2 million has been made over the past four years as the procurement of the ambulance was crucial for the healthcare sector of the country. The officials have shared that this was a very crucial development and challenging procurement at the same time.
The Prime Minister spoke about how the nation did not have adequate ambulance facility when they came into office. The government also had to face supply chain issues in getting the ambulances delivered to the island within time.
“One of the most pressing challenges we inherited was a country without an adequate ambulance fleet. We responded by investing more than $2 million in a brand-new fleet of ambulances, significantly improving emergency response and helping to save many more lives,” Dr. Drew said on Thursday.
He also added that under his leadership, had delivered on and started work on several initiatives including the construction of a MRI building to house a new Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine; renovation of the lobby at the J. N. France General Hospital; improved services to patients at the Accident And Emergency unit; and the Out-Patient section.
There has been increased professional training of nurses; training and certification of paramedics in the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) department at the J N France General Hospital in Basseterre; the Mary Charles Hospital in Molineux; and the Pogson Medical Centre in Sandy Point.
The Ministry of Health has also increased the number of consultants and hired specialist doctors in key areas. Over 40 nurses from Ghana have been brought in to provide adequate healthcare for the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.
