Basseterre: The Department of Agriculture in its efforts to address the monkey problem affecting agricultural production in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis has ordered the sale of green vervet monkey meat as a food for dogs.
Assistant Coordinator of the Pest Program in the Department of Agriculture, Bernel Hobson, said in a recent interview: “When we shoot these monkeys, clean them, we sell them to the Department of Agriculture at $ 5.00 per pound.”
He also said that the monkey meat marked as ‘Tree Meat’ is also healthy for humans to consume, “so if you buy the monkey meat from us at the department, it is up to you to consume it, but we are selling it for the sole purpose of dog food.”
He said with this tree flesh you can make monkey soup like that of goat water.
In the February 24 issue of ‘Working for You’, former director of the Department of Agriculture, Melvin James, said that the $ 1.2 million project approved by the Team-Unity government was aimed at face the problem of the wild monkey.
Coordinator of the Feral program or Monkey program, Winston Mulraine, said: “Right now we have a whole lot of choppers and shooters in the area, so they do a pretty good job.”
“The farmers are somewhat satisfied with the progress we have made so far in the area, and we can only look forward to better things,” he said. Mulraine said.
