The St Kitts and Nevis Ministry of Health has deployed the National Digital Health Information System (NDHIS) at the Joseph N. France (JNF) General Hospital. The announcement for this development was made during a media briefing on behalf of the Ministry of Health.
The director of Health Projects and Strategic Initiatives, Dr Jenson Morton has called this a major development.
According to the Health Ministry, they have been constantly making efforts to modernise healthcare delivery and establish a more efficient, integrated and patient-centred health system.
According to Dr Morton, the system is much more than a transition from paper-based records to digital files. It highlights the efforts of the various organs of the administration as they work on digitisation across different sectors.
The official contract for the NDHIS was signed between the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (NTRC) and the St. Kitts National Robotics Association in May 2026. Under this agreement , the scope of the system which was to be built included design, development, testing and implementation of a digital health system intended to strengthen healthcare delivery across the Federation.
Providing further insight into the initiative, Dr. Ricardo Neil, Founder and Chairman of the St. Kitts National Robotics Association, presented a detailed video demonstration of the system during the briefing. The presentation showcased its functionality and outlined the various components currently being developed.
NDHIS was Locally developed by the youngsters of St Kitts and Nevis. The project is being implemented as an integrated platform that will eventually incorporate electronic health records, billing, pharmaceuticals, stores, laboratory records and X-ray records. It is also designed to facilitate the seamless exchange of information across different areas of the healthcare system.
Dr. Morton has announced that the Ministry’s long-term vision is to create an interconnected health information environment linking the JNF General Hospital’s emergency room, inpatient and outpatient services, government clinics and the wider public health system, while also extending connectivity to healthcare facilities in Nevis.
The NDHIS will also help in permanently including all the important information, such as allergies and previous medical presentations, on a patient’s record. With this feature, the doctors and healthcare providers can serve the patients better. This feature is expected to help particularly during emergencies when a patient may be unable to communicate critical details about their medical history.
To facilitate the initial rollout of the system, the Ministry of Education provided the JNF General Hospital with 50 laptops and 20 tablets. The devices will help in providing healthcare providers with the technological resources needed to access and utilise the NDHIS as implementation progresses.
