PAHO/WHO has given Charlestown Nevis the designation of the first age friendly city in the Eastern Caribbean. The Nevis Island Administration is very happy to be bestowed with this honour and has promised that they will work hard to maintain this designation.
The recognition by PAHO/WHO is proof of the fact that elderly population of the island is satisfied with the facilities that are available to them. The fact that PAHO/WHO acknowledged Charlestown in Nevis to be the first age friendly city in the Caribbean is proof that the NIA’s is doing good work in terms of elderly care and support. The Minister of Gender Affairs and Social Development et al has shared that she is proud of the island.
Minister Jahnel Nisbett said that the Nevis island Administration wants to make sure that people of all ages have a good life in Charlestown and other communities of Nevis. The Minister also believes that age should not be a barrier or limitation for growth of the people.
People of all ages should have access to a good lifestyle and facilities as they spend their life on Nevis. The Minister of Gender Affairs, Health and Social Development shared that age is not about growing old.
She talked about the significance of the milestone on her social media and said that people of all ages should be celebrated. Caribbean is seeing a shift in demographic and they will be seeing increase in the population of the elderly across the region.
All the administrations across Caribbean should make efforts to improve facilities for their elderly. The island of Nevis has taken several initiatives to make the island more welcoming and comfortable for the elderly population.
Senior Citizens Recreational Program is a popular example of these initiatives. This programme gives the elderly population a chance to remain active and social in their advanced age. The Minister of Health, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Jahnel Nisbett spends a significant amount of time with the elders in Nevis.
