Nevis is observing the 13th edition of the Agriculture Awareness Month. The Minister of Agriculture in the Nevis Island Administration is commemorating the month-long festivities under the theme A New Era: Leveraging Technology for Sustainable and Inclusive Agriculture.
The aim of the commemoration is to spread awareness regarding the importance of the agriculture sector. The NIA Minister of Agriculture, Eric Evelyn opened the 13th agriculture awareness month with a public address.
The island of Nevis has been trying hard to make sure that the agriculture sector gains the recognition that it deserves. Minister Evelyn highlighted that the agriculture awareness month will be organized in order to improve the visibility of the sector.
Through this initiative, NIA is also looking forward to improving the relationship between the administration and the agriculture department. The month of festivities and activities has already started with the staff morning devotions at Prospect church in Nevis.
On May 7th, the island will be hosting a sale of selected products, technical clinic and seed distribution. All these activities will be taking place at the Larinson Parry Agricultural Depot.
The agriculture department will also be organizing Virus Management Training at the Disaster Management Department Conference Room. The initiative will be implemented in collaboration with Caribbean Chemicals.
On the next day, May 8 the NIA will be facilitating Fruit Tree Planting at Primary Schools.
On May 14, the island will be engaged in Seedling distribution and assistance with grow boxes. The distribution will be done for the pre-schools and nurseries.
On May 15, the experts will convene for Backyard farmers training in Pest and Disease identification, prevention and management. The participants will learn about good practices in backyard farming.
On May 20, Livestock Farmers will receive training on Intensive and semi-intensive Management Systems at the Red Cross Building.
On May 21 and May 22, the Nevis Island Administration will be hosting an Open House at the Veterinary Division
On May 28, NIA will facilitate a staff Development Session at NEPAC
Staff Fun Day at the Elquemedo T Willett Park will mark the end of the Agriculture Awareness Month Calendar. The Agriculture Awareness Month is an annual initiative started in the year 2013.
In the last decade, the initiative has helped many people gain better understanding and knowledge about the agriculture sector and practices.
