Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries in the government of St Kitts and Nevis, Samal Duggins, recently visited the Fisher’s Cooperative building in Dieppe Bay with his team of operatives from the Ministry of Fisheries. The aim of the visit was to further assess the damage caused by the passage of Hurricane Irma in 2017.
During the visit, Minister Samal Duggins interacted with the local fishermen of the Dieppe Bay area. He also took to his social media account to share glimpses of the visit with the locals. The visit falls directly in line with the minister’s commitment to updating the facilities associated with the fisheries industry in St Kitts and Nevis.
Taking to his social media to share an update regarding his interaction with a local fisherman, Minister Duggins wrote: While on-site, I had the opportunity to hear first-hand from local fisherman Darwin Francis how significant this building (Fisher’s Cooperative building in Dieppe Bay) is for fisherfolk in Dieppe and the surrounding communities.
The Minister of Agriculture, Samal Duggins, further took the opportunity to ensure the people of St Kitts and Nevis and especially the fishermen and fisherwomen community, that he is committed to ensuring that this critical site is reconstructed and outfitted with all the necessary equipment. The reconstruction of the building will ensure that our fisherfolk can store and sell fish both locally and regionally.
Minister Samal Duggins received appreciation from a social media user who applauded him for arranging the visit to interact with the fishermen of the Dieppe Bay Community. He wrote:
Good to see that you were in my hometown, Hon. Duggins. It would be good if the plan to rebuild/renovate could also make provisions for social and cultural groups to host meetings and events within a single space.
Minister Duggins schedules regular interactions with the people of his community, those who come under the jurisdiction of his ministry to become familiar with the issues and grievances that they face.
