The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, interacted with the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), Dr Joy St John, on Wednesday, January 11, 2023. During the meeting, Dr St John interacted with Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew. She updated him about regional public health matters. The particular focus of the interaction was on Covid-19.
Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew, also responsible for the health ministry for St Kitts and Nevis, welcomed the Executive Director of CARPHA for the discussion. Dr Terrance Drew, a practising doctor, shared his philosophy for preventing respiratory infections and other health issues following scientific pieces of evidence.
The Executive Director of the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), Dr St John confessed that she found the interaction with Dr Terrance Drew most fruitful. At the same time, she stated that St Kitts and Nevis is lucky to get a medical practitioner and minister of health as the head of the state.
Further, Dr Joy St John briefed the Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis about the background of the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA). The meeting also touched on the areas of the capacity building between the regional health agency (CARPHA) and St Kitts and Nevis.
Dr St John’s has instructed the regional health agency’s Chief Medical Officers of the member states to monitor the levels of respiratory diseases and other health problems. She stated that the people in the Caribbean Region must navigate life, play and work safely with the Covid 19.
She revealed that the CARPHA has already vaccinated the key individuals and sectors of the population against these diseases. Meanwhile, during the meeting and Interaction between Dr Terrance Drew and Dr Joy St John, the Chief Medical Officer of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Hazel Laws, was also in attendance.
Dr Joy St John received an honorary doctorate from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, in October 2022. The university recognised her efforts to regulate and manage the CARPHA’s response to Covid-19 in the Caribbean.
