Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis delivered a resounding address at the second Africa-CARICOM Summit which was opened on September 7. The event was hosted at the Nelson Mandela Hall of the headquarters of the African Union in Ethiopia.
Dr Terrance Drew co-chaired the event alongside João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, President of the Republic of Angola. The President of Angola also serves as the current Chairperson of the African Union.
The theme of the 2nd Africa-CARICOM Summit was Transcontinental Partnership in Pursuit of Reparatory Justice for Africans and People of African Descent, through Reparations. The Prime Minster, who attended the event in his capacity as the Incoming chair of CARICOM, called the event timely.
This is the first time that the CARICOM and the African Union are meeting face to face and goes on to show the strength of the roots between the Caribbean and the African Continent.
The Prime Minster said that Caribbean is proud of the strides made in strengthening these connections through Pan African advocacy. The Prime Minister said that the fight against apathide and closer social and cultural links between the people of Africa and the Caribbean is supported by the respective decisions of the African Union and the Caribbean community.
According to Dr Terrance Drew, the first in person meeting of the two organizations is timely in reinforcing the bonds between Africa and the Caribbean. The meeting will help the two regions in examining ways in which they can strengthen their partnership at the global and strategic levels.
Talking about the significance of the first ever in person meeting of the two organizations, Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew said, “This will allow us to deepen south-south cooperation while fostering shared prosperity and affirming a common voice on global platforms including on global peace, security, reform and multilateral issues such as climate change.”
