For the first time since 2011, the number of murders in St Kitts and Nevis has risen to 28. Yesterday, the 27th and 28th murders were recorded in the country in a homophobic shooting in which two people died.

In the first quarter of this year, nine murders were recorded. However, eight more people were murdered by June 2023, bringing the total

number of victims to 17, according to police statistics.

A month later, two young people were killed in separate incidents. All police data for 2023 will be published in early 2024, but the public feels the current trend follows a dark past. There were

  • 21 murders in 2013
  • 24 murder in 2014
  • 29 murder in 2015
  • 32 murder in 2016

According to police statistics, there was one intentional shooting In 2020, four t in 2021 and three in 2022. Five cases were registered in 2023.

There were no bullet shooters in 2020-2022. However, two were recorded between January and June 2023. Six cases were recorded in 2020, 2021 and 2022. Four points were recorded from January to June 2023.

Dr. Patrick Martin recently put the impact of gun violence into perspective. He described the current situation as a matter of national security and health.

What is behind the national increase in murders?

The members of society pointed to some factors that may have contributed to the growth but still need to be convinced. In popular local radio shows, discussions of the murders focused on individual attitudes, the Peace Programme, exclusion from social programmes, parenting skills, unemployment, poverty and revenge.

National security has not publicly identified the motives for the murders. However, some murders committed in 2023 resulted in arrests and charges at The Round Table National Security.

In April, Prime Minister Terrence Drew advised people not to buy guns and America not to let guns enter the Caribbean region.

The league is currently averaging two murders per month in 2023 based on the current trend, with the majority being young men between the ages of 18 and 47. but in November, more than two murders have been recorded.

At the installation ceremony in February 2023, the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force Commissioner James Sutton seven crime prevention initiatives that will drive the organization during his tenure, namely community policing, road safety, human resource development, and better utilization. Technology, ongoing collaboration with other agencies and evidence-based policing. Fighting crime is a collective approach.

The commissioner advised the public to assist law enforcement agencies in fighting the crimes. The Police High Command also launched Operation Reassurance early in his tenure to combat murders and other criminal activities.
