Nevis Disaster Management Department is stepping up its public education campaign as the Hurricane Season enters its most active period. The department has shared that they are asking businesses and communities to increase their efforts for preparedness.

The officials have shared that the preparedness should become the responsibility for the whole community. The officials have shared that the Hurricane Awareness Drive 2026 is being hosted under the theme “Preparedness Starts With You.”

The drive is running from August 16 to August 22, 2026 and started with church visits on Sunday, August 16. Climate and Disaster Communications Ambassadors visited the churches across the island of Nevis to kickstart the campaign.

The aim of the preparedness drive is to make sure that the messages for preparedness reach all households, schools, churches and more.

The Climate and Disaster Communications Ambassadors delivered presentations on the topic of preparedness. As per the information shared online, the presentation talked about practical steps that households across the island can take before the threat of a storm.

The experts have urged homes to develop emergency plans and assemble emergency kits to power their capacities. At the same time, the experts have also asked the people to make sure that they monitor official alerts from the disaster management department.

As a part of the preparedness drive, the people across the island also have to know the locations of the shelters. As a community, the people are also responsible for making arrangements for individuals who might be in need of support.

The department is working alongside locals and faith organizations to reach more households across the island. The officials have shared that the department is making use of established networks of information to get important messages across.

The officials have further shared that the week long disaster preparedness drive is targetting various important landmarks of the island to maximise the reachability of the message. The organisation has shared that they are running this drive in collaboration with the St Kitts Red Cross Society.
