Dr Terrance Drew, the Prime Minister and Minister of National Security of St Kitts and Nevis convened a disaster preparedness stakeholder meeting ahead of the beginning of the Trans Atlantic Hurricane Season. The meeting was hosted on May 30, 2026 at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Conference Room.
The meeting was attended by the members of the National Disaster Committee (NDC) and several other important stakeholders. The officials have shared that they want to make sure that the the nation is adequately prepared for the upcoming hurricane season.
The officers took the time to review the preparedness measures for the upcoming few months. The officers identify areas requiring attention, and strengthen coordination among agencies responsible for disaster management and emergency response.
The Prime Minister talked about the importance of preparedness and collective responsibility during the meeting. He said that when a disaster strikes, everyone gets affected in the aftermath which makes preparedness important.
PM Drew also said that disaster preparedness is not the responsibility of one single organisation but the whole organisation. “We should be ready to respond swiftly, protect lives and property, and ensure that our communities can recover as quickly as possible.”
During the meeting, ten disaster preparedness subcommittees provided updates and detailed reports on their respective areas of responsibility. They also talked about the measures already undertaken in advance of the hurricane season.
Deputy National Disaster Coordinator at NEMA, Julian Bradshaw, and Meteorological Officer, Denel Dixon gave presentations during the meeting. Dixon gave the attendants of the meeting an overview of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season outlook.
He also talked about the forecasts and conditions expected to influence weather patterns throughout the season. Bradshaw thanked attendees for making time to participate in the important meeting despite their demanding schedules.
Prime Minister Drew said that the government is committed to protecting the people of St Kitts and Nevis. He said that they will work through careful planning, collaboration, and continuous preparedness efforts.
They want to strengthen national resilience and ensure that all agencies remain prepared to respond effectively to any threat posed by tropical storms, hurricanes, or other hazards during the 2026 season.
