St Kitts and Nevis is preparing for the hurricane season with nationwide simulation. The simulation will help in testing emergency response and strengthening coordination across the islands.

The Simulation is being organized by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The first day of the Simulation was led by the Prime Minster of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew

The Hurricane Season, which runs from June 1 to November 30 tests the endurance and preparedness of the country. The hurricane seasons have been getting more and more active for the last few years.

Caribbean nations are facing natural disasters ranging from Tropical Storms to a hurricane up to level five. The meeting was attended by several stakeholders of the nation associated with disaster management and disaster response.

Several districts leaders were also present at the meeting organized by NEMA to discuss the steps that they have taken to secure their communities. The attendants included:

• Permanent Secretary for NEMA, Glenroy Blanchette

• Disaster Mitigation Council Chairperson Clarecia Stevens

• Director of NEMA, Pemberton

Representatives from the various departments and Ministries of St Kitts and Nevis were also present at the stakeholders meeting. The St. Kitts and Nevis Red Cross Society, Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM), amateur radio operators were also invited to participate in the preliminary meeting.

The NEMA organized this stakeholder interaction with the aim of getting an accurate idea of the preparedness of the federation. The National Emergency Management Agency and the government of the country advocate for a proactive response.

The administration is making efforts to improve coordination, planning, and readiness in all the sectors of the country. In the event of an emergency, all parts of the country will be under a state of emergency which makes it imperative that the nation is prepared.

In line with this line of thought, the government is urging the people of the country to do their part to prepare for the upcoming emergency. The officials have shared that preparedness is the responsibility of every individual and group.
