St Kitts and Nevis is the first member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to sign an agreement with the African Export-Import Bank (AFREXIMBANK). The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, has taken to his social media account to share an update on the development.
As per the update, the prime minister’s team held bilateral meetings with the various representatives of the AFREXIMBANK. The bilateral meeting was hosted during the Forty-Fourth (44th) Meeting of the Conference of the CARICOM Heads of Government.
After meeting the AFREXIMBANK representatives, the Prime Minister’s team also met with the President of Afreximbank, Professor Benedict Oramah, and his team on Friday, February 17, 2023.
The team headed by Prime Minister Terrance Drew signed the memorandum of understanding (MOU). The agreement between the two parties included measures of collaboration on initiatives to implement strategic projects in renewable energy. The initiatives included in the contract are a solar power plant and grid connectivity between St Kitts and Nevis.
Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew revealed through his social media that all the above projects align with St Kitts and Nevis’ shared commitment to developing geothermal energy and smart metering, among other energy-related initiatives.
Along with Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew, several other important dignitaries representing St Kitts and Nevis were also part of the signing ceremony.
Chief among the attendants were: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Denzil Douglas. Head of Intra-African Trade and Corporate Finance, Ayman Elzoghby; Permanent Secretary in the office of the Prime Minister, Naeemah Hazelle;
Other representatives included Kanayo Awani, Executive Vice President Intra-African Trade; Christine Beblawy; Moataz Samy, Corporate Treasury Manager, Elsewedy Electric; Temwa Gondwe, Senior Manager, Intra-African Trade Bank; and Vitalis Ekene Uzor Special Assistant to the President of Afreximbank.
A delegation from Afreximbank will return to St Kitts and Nevis on Monday, February 20 2023. Here, the team will discuss the proposed initiatives further with the government.
