The Nevis Restoration and Conservation Society have started a 20th edition of the annual Clean Island Sweep for Earth Day 2023. The initiative on the part of the NRCS is part of a coastal cleanup campaign. The activity is funded by Ocean Conservancy’s TeamSeas programme.
Under this significant restoration and preservation programme, started by the Nevis Restoration and Conservation Society, the members of the NRCS cleared an illegal dump site at Indian Castle during the 2022 edition of the event. ,
The Nevis Restoration and Conservation Society team shared the event update on social media. They shared that For this year, they will do the 20th annual Clean Island Sweep for Earth Day 2023. They added that the programme has also enabled us to design, print and install 16 signs around the island.
The Nevis Restoration and Conservation Society teamed up with Nevis Solid Waste Management Authority for the initiative to clean and restore the island to its former glory. Through this partnership, they identified 16 sites notorious for illegal dumping. The places included:
- Bath Village/VON Radio,
- Nugent Heights,
- Cottle Church/ Mount Nevis Hotel Road,
- Herbert’s Beach,
- Jessup’s Bay,
- Newcastle Bay,
- Long Point,
- Brown Hill
- Mt Lily,
The list had several other suspected places’ names that are not publicly known.
The authorities have further asserted that they understand that the fragile natural resources of our small island are finite. Accordingly, they observed that nothing will be left for future generations if the people don’t act now. Together with our technical and financial partners, we do what we can to raise awareness and undertake activities that contribute to ensuring that #NevisNice remains #NevisNaturally.
The Restoration and Conservation Society team urge their members and friends to do their part and report any suspected illegal dumping activity to the Society. They declared that We could make a difference, one small step at a time, adding that a clean Nevis Starts With Us
