The Ministry of Education is continuously showcasing its commitment to school safety by distributing fire extinguishers to various schools across St Kitts. The distribution of fire extinguishers is part of the government’s ‘Model Safe School Programme‘.
This initiative is funded by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) to support the Ministry of Education’s goal to strengthen emergency preparedness in schools and create a safe learning environment for children through assessments and targeted interventions.
Significance of Model Safe School Programme
Dr Tricia Esdaille highlighted the importance of having safe schools in St Kitts during the latest fire extinguisher distribution ceremony, Focal Point for the Safe School Programme.
She said that the Ministry of Education and Safe School Programme will continue to work with nine pilot schools to build this program.
Phases of the Model Safe School Programme
Dr Esdaille further added that the distribution of fire extinguishers is the first phase of the program and over time, training programs will be organized to teach the children on the importance of fire extinguishers and how to use them
She also said that the next phase of this initiative will include a combined approach to school safety, building more community connections, development of school safety plans, school safety drills, and capacity building for staff and students as a practice for any future incidents in schools.
School Principals acknowledges this initiative
School Principals, who received the fire extinguishers, appreciated the thought of safe schools and acknowledged the importance of the Model Safe School Programme in ensuring the safety of students and staff.
They said that if the need ever rises, they would use the fire extinguishers correctly, keeping the safety of children as their main priority.
