Marsha Henderson, Minister of Employment and Labour, highlighted St Kitts and Nevis’ proactive measures to support small businesses ahead of the upcoming minimum wage increase.
The national minimum wage will increase from $9 to $12.50 per hour, with a further increase scheduled for July 2025, aiming to support small businesses.
The National Minimum Wage Committee has recommended the creation of a task force to evaluate the impact of the phased minimum wage increase on the small business sector.
Minister Henderson suggests insulation from minimum wage increases for small businesses to survive, acknowledging the sector’s impact on their costs.
Minister Henderson noted that the small business sector would be the sector that is impacted by the increase in the minimum wage.
“The committee suggested that there must be a measure of insulation from the rise in the minimum wage that would affect the cost for small businesses to survive,” she said.
The government plans to provide targeted support to small businesses through government subsidies and concessions to offset rising labour costs and ensure their sustainability.
Minister Henderson plans a review of the government’s fiscal incentive policy and concessions for micro and small businesses, aiming to reduce operational costs.
Minister Henderson stated that consultations and recommendations from the minimum wage committee influenced the decision to increase the minimum wage.
Minister Henderson highlighted that the government recognizes the need for an integrated policy approach and a clear framework to ensure labour protection for all workers and sustainable enterprises.
“This government is, in fact, aware of the fact that achieving labour protection for all workers and, at the same time, ensuring sustainable enterprises requires an integrated policy approach and a clear and coherent framework,” she noted
