The Deputy Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Geoffrey Hanley addressed the people of the country on the occasion of International Men’s Day on November 19. The Minister of Gender Affairs highlighted the importance of the day for the men of the country.
The theme for the 2025 International Men’s Day was: celebrating Men and Boys. The theme falls in line with the local theme of St Kitts and Nevis and the mantrap of the upcoming year Power Purpose, Perspective: Shaping a positive future for Caribbean Men.
The Minister of Gender Affairs said that both the themes fall in line with the shared vision of St Kitts and Nevis and the Caribbean which engages and empowers the men and boys of St Kitts and Nevis.
According to Dr Hanley, they want to make sure the people of the country are equipped with the strength of mind and body and are compassionate. The International Men’s Day is not merely a date on the Calendar, it is a movement, said the Deputy Prime Minister.
Dr Geoffrey Hanley added, “The movement recognises and celebrates the invaluable contribution of men and boys in our families, communities and our nation.” The movement provides for Introspection to challenge harmful stereotypes promote positive masculinity and to foster spaces where men and boys can flourish mentally, emotionally and socially.
The Minister further added that through this movement, we reaffirm that gender equity is not a woman’s idea or issue, it is a human right issue. Gender equity, according to Dr Hanley requires the active involvement and leadership of men and boys
According to the Minister, this year, both the islands organized a number of activity in commemoration of World Men’s Day. The initiative promotes wellness, dialogue, education and celebration.
The nation organised several events to commemorate the day throughout the month of November, including a wellness walk, A boys excellence reception in Nevis, and a regional webinar on male allyship against Gender Based Violence held on November 13.
According to Dr Hanley, each event is an opportunity to learn, connect and grow. The Minister has highlighted some initiatives which they are proud of, hosted all over the month.
The commemoration will conclude with the hosting of an awards event in Nevis
