St Kitts and Nevis National Carnival Committee shared the list of awardees who won the Fourth Sugar Mas Awards during the previous weekend

The St Kitts and Nevis National Carnival Committee has shared the list of awardees who have won the Fourth Sugar Mas Awards during the previous weekend. The people who have worked for the development of the Sugar Mas Carnival for the last fifty years. 

In the 2025 edition of the Sugar Mas Awards honored 33 individuals in six categories, which are: 

  • Spirit of Carnival Award
  • Steward of Carnival Award
  • Poinciana Award
  • Royal Sceptre Award
  • Sweet Strings Award
  • Gold Standard Award

The awards honor different categories of people who have been working for the Carnival in their various capacities, including  Administration, production, promotion, music, talent, pageant and more. The awardees include: 

 

Spirit of Carnival Awardees

  • Bernie Roland: Master costume builder and creative visionary.
  • Gillian “Auntie Gillie” Skerritt: Ole Mas icon and living carnival archive.
  • Junior “Melbourne” Constance: Master costume builder and designer.
  • Eileen Grey: Over 40 years of leadership and mentorship in various carnival roles.
  • Levi “Bar Fish” Bradshaw: Legendary Carnival Marshall & Gate Attendant.
  • Rabuka Bass / Lincoln Hobson: Renowned DJ & Sound Professional for 20+ years.
  • Esther Virginia Harris: Former Japanese Girl.
  • Jerome “Lord Ranger” Vanterpool: Road March Winner 1980 (7 Day Mas), Calypso Song Writer.
  • Curtis “Sam Dopey” Morton: The National Carnival Senior Calypso Monarch (Nevis) in 1978 and 1979, and a songwriter.
  • Shirley “Shirley Biscuit” Forde: Super Fan of Carnival Music for 30 years.
  • Jerard “Lord De Maths Too Hard” Berry was the 1990 Senior Calypso Monarch and is a cultural contributor.

Steward of the Carnival Awardees 

  • Rudolph McMaster: For his work supported carnival street activities for over 20 years.
  • Sandra Berridge is a pageant expert and advocate for “Mas” (masquerade).
  • Tony’s Liquor Center is a central hub for carnival events like Jouvert and ticket sales.
  • TDC has been a partner to carnival participants and stakeholders since its inception.
  • Idetha Richards: Stalwart in pageantry, Miss West Districts 1964, and provided outstanding support to carnival in general.
  • Prudence France: Over 20 years of shaping pageant winners and stars.
  • Anne Wigley: Over 45 years of mas, folklore, and cultural service.

 

Sweet String Awardees

  • Sydney Matthew: Iconic musician and key figure in top Kittitian bands.
  • Gesel Charles: Outstanding female steel pan player and promoter of the pan movement.
  • Kenrick Hicks-Williams: Member of Ellie Matt & De Gis Brass, outstanding musician, songwriter, and arranger.
  • Joseph Benders: Pioneer of the steelpan movement and celebrated steel band leader.

Royal Sceptre Awardees

  • Kaeve “Mimi” Armstrong: Miss St. Kitts & Nevis (2013–2014) and Miss Jaycees Caribbean Queen (2014–2015).
  • Pernelle Abraham: Miss Talented Teen 2012–2013 and Miss Haynes Smith Caribbean Talented Teen 2013–2014.
  • Jackiema Flemming: Miss Swimsuit 2017–18 and is recognized as an outstanding ambassador in various pageants.
  • Zinga Imo is in the elite circle as one of only four women to hold both the Miss Talented Teen (2009–2010) and National Carnival Queen (2012–2013) titles.

Poinciana Award Winners

  • Elwin “Daddy Bougna” Lucas: Wylerz Riddim Pioneer and Kittitian music innovator.
  • Jennifer “Singing Jennifer” Demming: The first woman to compete in calypso.
  • Malcolm Simmonds and Mrs. Hilary Wattley: Members of the first National Carnival Committee.
  • Oliver Glasford was the winner of the first Soul King (Song) competition.

Gold Standard Awardees

  • Joan Mallalieu: Recognized for long-standing commitment to carnival design, costume making, junior operations, and judging.
  • Pamela Wall: Honored for over 50 years of dedicated service to carnival, including pageantry, revelry, mentorship, and judging.
  • Shirleyan Adams: Acknowledged as the backbone of carnival operations for over 30 years.
  • Sir Hugh Rawlins: Celebrated for lifelong dedication to culture, carnival, and calypso.
