Under the leadership of St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party, the government of St Kitts and Nevis has made notable strides in food security. The country, in collaboration with several international partners, has been working towards the realization of the country’s food security goals.
Over the last three years, St Kitts and Nevis has worked with the agriculture stakeholders within the country and abroad. In the last three years farmers and agriculturists have received significant support from the Ministry led by Samal Duggins.
The government of St Kitts and Nevis is dedicated to decreasing the food import bills which the country is currently facing. In the last three years, St Kitts and Nevis has entered collaborations with international organizations, universities and more to help farmers learn more creative ways to improve their output.
The monthly agriculture open nights are proof of the fact that the Agriculture sector is on an upward trajectory. The people of St Kitts and Nevis have also urged the members of the community to buy more locally grown produce. The Ministry has also organized several workshops and training programmes to introduce the farmers to more modern agriculture practices.
The officials have shared that the members of the community have to support their agriculture product allowing the local farmers to benefit from their produce. The Ministry of Agriculture has started a backyard farming initiative which will help in making sure that the people can grow some substances for their personal use.
This programme was meant to support the country’s goal for improving the food production in the federation by 25 percent by the year 2025. This would help in reducing the food import bills for the federation and make them food secure.
Further, the St Kitts and Nevis administration has also signed several agreements for the improvement of the agricultural sector of the country. These agreements bring significant technical support to the agricultural sector of the country. The Ministry has shared that they will continue work with the international partners to bring more benefits to the people.
