Basseterre, St. Kitts: Samal Duggins, Minister of Agriculture, shared exciting updates about the progress in the construction of the Poultry Hatchery facility. The facility is being considered as a cornerstone of the St. Kitts and Nevis Layer Chicken Industry Sustainable Development Project.

The facility is being constructed with the assistance of the Taiwan government. The minister of Agriculture, Fisheries et al. highlighted that this project seeks to enhance the agricultural sector.

The construction of the Poultry Hatchery facility is expected to provide substantial economic benefits and ensure greater food security for the nation.

“During my last visit, the groundwork was just beginning. Today, the main structure of the hatchery facility is complete, with state-of-the-art incubation and hatchery equipment being installed,” proudly expressed Minister Duggins.

This project started one year ago, with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Republic of China (Taiwan) and St Kitts and Nevis. Today, after one year of tireless work, the project is on the homestretch.

The completion of this project marks a remarkable milestone for the poultry sector in St Kitts. As per the experts of the field, the sector holds the largest share of national expenditure and presents a number of opportunities for local farmers.

“Electrical and water systems are being finalized, ensuring efficient and sustainable operation,” added Samal Duggins.

It is also to be noted that the new hatchery will address the existing gap in egg production in the nation. The new development will help the nation in achieving 100% efficiency of output.

Farmers will now have a reliable source of day-old birds, significantly bolstering local egg production.

This project is not just about building infrastructure; it is about building a future in which the nation of St. Kitts and Nevis is self-sufficient in food production.

“Here’s to being self-sufficient and food secure by 2025 and beyond,” concluded the Minister responsible for Agriculture.
