Dr. Terrance Drew met with the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Dr. Lai Ching-Te during his official state visit to Taiwan. The two leaders met in the office of the President in the office of Taipei and discussed the long standing relationships between the two nations.
Both leaders delivered brief remarks in the beginning of the meeting highlighting the importance of this diplomatic initiative. Then Prime Minister Drew and President Ching-Te proceeded to conduct a private discussion with each other on topics like strengthening the collaboration and partnerships between the two nations.
They also discussed ways of expanding to newer areas of collaboration. The meeting was a venue for the discussion of the long standing and unwavering relationship that has existed between St. Kitts and Nevis and Taiwan for the last four decades.
The heads of both states highlighted that Taiwan and St. Kitts and Nevis share values of democracy mutual respect and people centric development. They highlighted that they will continue to work together in health, education, technology and other areas.
Prime Minister Terrance Drew said that Taiwan has been positively impacting the lives of Kittitian and Nevisian students who are studying in Taiwan. He said that Taiwan has been investing in the lives and development of people of St. Kitts and Nevis.
Taiwan has provided scholarships and training opportunities to students of St. Kitts and Nevis helping shape a brighter future for them and the country. Further discussions touched on the ongoing projects which are being realised with the support and collaboration of Taiwan.
These projects include the new climate smart JNF General Hospital and other advancements which Taiwan has supported in the healthcare sector. On Thursday Prime Minister Terrance Drew visited the Veterans General Hospital in Taipei. The aim of the visit was to understand the modern medical practices that Taiwan uses in their hospitals .
After the visit Prime Minister Terrance Drew said that Taiwan’s medical expertise is second to none. Further, Dr. Drew said that he will continue to co-operate with Taiwan to support specialist training, hospital development and telemedicine. All this is a part of St. Kitts and Nevis’ efforts to modernise their healthcare sector.
