The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, was recently featured in a special interview with the media to provide updates regarding the developments the newly appointed government of St Kitts and Nevis introduced in the six months that they have assumed office. The Prime Minister took to his social media to discuss his government’s accomplishments in various sectors.
Prime Minister Drew also handles the responsibility for the Ministry of health. Accordingly, he has laid out a list of developments introduced by the Ministry of Health in the federation’s healthcare institutions and the management statistics.
Upon assuming office in August 2022, the first alteration the government led by Dr Terrance Drew introduced in the healthcare field was repealing the Covid-19 (Prevention and Control Bill). Through this step, the government removed the compulsion to wear masks and other precautions in public. However, the government left it to the discretion of the general public to continue the precautions on their behalf.
Meanwhile, shortly after taking office, the government removed all travel-related restrictions mandated by the Covid-19 pandemic and opened St Kitts and Nevis for tourism, travel and business purposes. The Ministry of Health has sourced and purchased an MRI Machine for the primary healthcare institution of St Kitts and Nevis, JNF General Hospital.
Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew shared that the government will ensure 24/7 doctors service at the Pogson Medical Centre. Additionally, to upgrade the capabilities of the healthcare professional, the Ministry of Health, under Dr Drew’s leadership, has arranged to train over 250 healthcare workers in Life Support systems like ALS and BLS.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has also promised Financial Assistance for any child needing medical treatments and aid overseas. Dr Terrance Drew made this announcement only a week after assuming the responsibilities of the Prime Minister.
While making efforts to upgrade the facilities of the healthcare institutions, the Ministry of Health has purchased new cataract equipment new urinalysis machine and upgraded the chemical cabinet at the oncology unit at the JNF General Hospital.
During the six months of the St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party Administration, led by Dr Terrance Drew, the government has settled a debt of 2 Million Dollars owed to medical suppliers. They restored and decluttered the Ministry of Health and the Cardin home. Additionally, they also employed ten elderly care assistants at the facility.
The government introduced the National Blood Drive Exercise/Launch of Blood Donation Campaign at JNF and increased the operating hours of the JNF Blood Bank. The Ministries of Health at the Federal and the NIA level also held several in-depth planning sessions for the further development of the healthcare in St Kitts and Nevis.
