The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, is in Washington DC to participate in the 2023 edition of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund Spring Meetings. During his attendance, Dr Drew got the chance to address the meeting of the Western Hemisphere Department (WHD), International Monetary Fund (IMF) Meeting. He was one of the ministers of Finance among several other Caribbean Ministers and Central Bank Governors from across the globe.
Dr Drew delivered his remarks at the Caribbean Ministers of Finance, World Bank, IMF and Central Bank Governors assembly. He talked about the issues that the Small Island Developing states. He put across the situation of his own country, St Kitts and Nevis, and the problems they face due to climate change.
St Kitts and Nevis is the smallest island state in the Caribbean, yet, Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew expressed his pride in assisting the global community in their fight against Climate Change. The Prime Minister “Reaping Opportunities from Green Energy”. Deputy Director of the Western Hemisphere Department, IMF, Nigel Chalk, presided over the meeting where Dr Drew delivered his remarks.
The meeting took place on Wednesday, April 12, 2023. Notably, this is the first time Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew is attending the IMF and World Bank meeting as the Minister of Finance. He was declared the winner of the August 2022 elections, making him the Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis.
During his address, Dr Terrance Drew talked about the ‘biggest challenge they face as a small island state, Climate Change. He also outlined the efforts that the government of St Kitts and Nevis is making to combat the issue.
Following the government’s commitment to global efforts to reduce ozone-depleting gases, they have announced the goal to reduce CO2 emissions by 61 per cent by 2030. Dr Terrance Drew remarked that This is indeed an ambitious undertaking. He also acknowledged that they are backed by concrete proposals involving the transition from an energy based on fossil fuels to cleaner & greener renewable energy alternatives
