Dr Terrance Drew, Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis has called for action to address the climate crisis that the world is going through. He said this while delivering the closing remarks at the COP28 which was hosted in Dubai. The Prime Minister said that the world is struggling as the temperatures are rising rapidly.

PM Drew claimed that the Small Island States like St Kitts and Nevis will not survive if the international community does not act. He acknowledged that the Global South and the people of the Caribbean Community are forced to face the problems associated with climate change.

He said that he is joining the CARICOM and the global south to demand greater accountability and responsibility from the international community. Dr Terrance Drew believes that if the world does not act soon, many islands of the Caribbean will be lost to pages of history.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis appreciated UAE for being a good example for the world in terms of Resilient development. He announced that their host nation is a clear example of what it means envision resilient development and delivering it. “Action Builds trust.” Said Dr Drew.

During his remarks the prime minster also advocated for inclusion of Republic of China (Taiwan) in the execution of important policy decisions in UN. He noted that as an island nation, they must be given the chance to play an important role in the international arena.

The Prime Minister talked about his country, the smallest country in the western hemisphere with a population of 55,000. He highlighted the various achievements of the country stating that they have made significant investments in different sectors, including energy.

The Prime Minister said that they can become the first model sustainable island state with the help of the country’s global collaborations, geo-strategic outlooks, and focused investments. He announced that the country can pave the path for the rest of the world to follow.

Later, the Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis and Nevis also discussed the development of Geothermal energy in the federation. He said that it allows for the two islands to be connected through pipelines.

The country wants to produce fully green energy in the near future. PM Terrance Drew said they want to reach the capacity that they can share energy with other neighbouring islands.

Dr Drew added that with an investment of USD 350 Million in the next five years, St Kitts and Nevis can go fully green. The investment will also allow the country to have enough generational capacity to provide clean energy to neighbouring islands.

PM Terrance Drew believes that the world needs to act not only to protect SIDS, but also the whole world from the problems and challenges of climate change.
