Premier of Nevis and Leader of the opposition has strictly opposed the newly introduced National Lotteries Authority Bill, 2025. The leader of the opposition has shared that he cannot support a state sponsored gambling.
To this, he government has clarified that the bill is aimed toward establishing a properly regulated National Lottery Authority. The bill provides for the strict management of the organization in such a way that the country can continue to benefit.
The Prime Minister of the country, who backed the passage of the bill in the National Assembly of St Kitts and Nevis on July 31. The Minister has shared that the bill will establish a properly managed lottery system.
This will help in making sure that the revenue that is generated though the system ca stay in the federation. This revenue is estimated up to EC $70 Million annually.
The administration believes that this revenue from the National Lotteries Authority can be utilized for the benefit of thee people. Development of the country can be funded through this revenue, which make it a good source of inspiration
The leader of the opposition has raised the concern that a state sponsored lottery will be very close to gambling and will lead to people getting addicted to easy money.
However, another aspect for this can also be argued upon, which suggests that with a government owned NLA, the safeguards that the government can put in place will help safeguard the people of the island.
Further, it can also be argued that the members of the government are working on improving the bill. The government ownership can make sure the bill has the highest public accountability and safeguards. Currently, the bill is at the legislation stage. The authorities have shared that they are open to interacting with the community and organize consultations.
The administration can introduce amendments which make sure that the bill has instituted safeguards and funding transparency. The government is dedicated to making sure that the voice of the people is heard.
