Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, attended the Plenary Session of the Forty-Fourth Regular Meeting of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government Conference on February 15, 2023. The session was held at the Baha Mar Convention Center, Nassau, Bahamas.
Here, the Prime Minister and Minister of Health, St Kitts and Nevis, interacted with the other attendants of the Plenary Session and presented an intervention on health-related matters. The members’ discussion revolved around the ongoing issues related to the COVID-19 virus.
Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew provided this intervention in support of the report presented by the Executive Director of CARPHA, Dr Joy St John. In the report, Dr St John detailed the effects of Covid-19 and other regional health-related issues. She described the role of the new provincial health security agenda and the actions that the institution under her leadership have taken to deal with the health issues and challenges originating from climate change.
Meanwhile, Dr Terrance Drew outlined the initiatives St Kitts and Nevis took to deal with the Pandemic. Notably, the country under his leadership has opened their borders completely to the rest of the world. Accordingly, he applauded the Ministry of the health of St Kitts and Nevis for managing the Pandemic. The Ministry has set up COVID-19 surveillance, prevention, treatment, and control measures.
These responses are now integral to the Federation’s overall infectious disease preparedness and response mechanism. Dr St John also introduced the CARICOM heads to the Pandemic Fund. In support of the initiative, Dr Terrance Drew urged his fellow heads of government in the Caribbean Community to use the fund for the benefit of their respective countries.
He also encouraged the CARICOM heads of government to learn from their experiences in the Covid 19 pandemic. Dr Terrance Drew believes that this will enable the development of robust pandemic preparedness and response mechanisms. In turn, it will reduce the socioeconomic impact of future crises of this nature upon the region.
