St Kitts and Nevis hosts WIPO Meeting to enhance sports facility IMAGE FACEBOOK

The Government of St Kitts and Nevis was pleased to host the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Ministerial Meeting for Caribbean Countries, which Attorney General Garth Wilkin chaired at Park Hyatt on November 6 2023.

The meeting aimed to translate Caribbean innovation and creativity into sustainable economic prosperity.

Distinguished attendees attended this meeting, such as senior Government Representatives, representatives from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

All these attendees took part in the meeting, where they discussed a different range of topics that were seen as necessary for the Caribbean region.

 Some of the covered topics were Intellectual Property (IP), Business, and Exports, Creating Value through Geographical Indications (GIs) and Origin-Linked Products; Copyright and the Creative Industries; Intellectual Property in Sports, the Marrakesh Treaty, the Impact of Horizontal Cooperation/Madrid Protocol on Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), the Significance of Intellectual Property Education; Innovative Business Solutions, the Crucial Role of Legal Frameworks for IP Protection; IP’s Role in the Tourism Sector, Patent Law Reform and the OECS Sub-Regional System, Effective Collective Management Systems, and Legislative Frameworks concerning Trademarks and Patents.

The prime minister of St Kitts And Nevis, Terrence Drew, delivered a remarkable welcoming speech to the attendees.

Still, I am sure that all of my Caribbean colleagues can quickly bring to mind examples of citizens in our respective countries who we believe have what it takes to soar to the highest levels of success and achievement but who can’t seem to break into and dominate, international markets” Quoted from Prime Minister Drew opening speech.

Terrence Drew commented on the unity of the Caribbean region in his statement. He highlighted how the government of S Kitts and Nevis was grateful to WIPO for their longstanding support and collaboration towards ensuring creativity and innovation so that the region could thrive together.
