The Caribbean Public Health recently announced that St Kitts And Nevis will be experiencing high rainfall, so the probability of the spread of dengue is on high alert.
The dengue virus causes dengue fever; it is transmitted by the female Aedes Aegypti, tiny creatures with significant threats.
The mosquito carriers of dengue can turn the safe space into breading ground. The typical entry of these creatures is uncovered house gutters because water can accumulate in them when it rains, creating perfect breeding sports for the mosquitos.
Covering all house gutters with fine mesh can prevent the accumulation of debris, allowing proper channel drainage and blocking the mosquito breeding cycle by stopping the entry of adult mosquitoes.
Simple actions like these can protect the residents and keep them safe and free from mosquitos.
The residents of St Kitts And Nevis should be aware of the following symptoms.
High fever
Headache
Pain behind the eyes
Muscle and joint pain
Skin rash
The sickness can erupt quickly into severe pains if not taken care of at an early stage, resulting in more advanced symptoms such as:
Persistence vomiting
Mucosal bleeding
Intense and abdomen pain
It is advised that the affected or infected person should visit the nearest hospital or clinic as soon as they experience the first mild symptoms to avoid severe pains and their spreading.
Moreover, the St Kitts residence should destroy mosquitoes’ habitats by removing breeding sources such as long grass and contaminated water by treating it with chemicals.
To prevent the spread of the Dengue virus, the St Kitts residents are advised to follow the following precautions:
Protecting yourselves by using personal repellents on your skin and clothes,
Use bed nets for adults if adult mosquitoes are prevalent.
Wear protective clothing like pants and long-sleeved tops.
Protect yourselves by using screens, doors, and windows.
Protect your schools and offices by disposing all bottles, cans, and water-holding containers in an approved refused bin with appropriate covers.
Keep lawn and vegetation trimmed.
Change and replenish water in the vase daily.
Store all use and new tyres in a dry place.
The St Kitt And Nevis Ministry of Health has advised people to take action and cover the gutters for safety.
