St. Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew highlighted the budget of the People-Centered program on 24 June 2024 through a social media post.
The people-centered programs have cost about a quarter billion dollars per year ($250,000,000), or about a quarter of the annual budget of St. Kitts and Nevis, outlined the Prime Minister.
“The government is investing in its people while they go low,” stated PM Drew. He duly noted the initiatives taken by his government in recent times and added that these initiatives are the efforts directed to help the people of the Federation.
The first initiative is an increase in the minimum wage, making it one of the highest in the Caribbean region. The increase is significantly $430, and the decision was made keeping in mind the challenges of cost of living and economy faced by the citizens.
The second is an increase in civil servants’ pay to enhance the quality of life for both the civil servants and the people of the country.
The third initiative is the Independence Reset, which has been applied in the country. This initiative enhances the cultural experiences of the people.
The fourth is the increased STEP, and the fifth is the stabilizing lift by replacing PAP, under which the vulnerable families earning less than EC$2500 monthly will be paid.
The sixth initiative is to elevate, and the seventh provides free college, with increased pre-school subsidy being the eighth initiative. These initiatives foster the importance of education in St. Kitts and Nevis.
The ninth is the implementation of the Children’s Medical Fund in the nation. This initiative will provide medical assistance to children who require sincere treatment abroad. Several children have been treated under this initiative, supported by the government of St. Kitts and Nevis.
The School Uniform and Food Voucher programs are the tenth and eleventh initiatives. These are specifically to enhance the education sector.
The twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth are the Electricity, Water, and Propane Gas Subsidy, aimed to enhance the quality of life. The fifteenth initiative was adjusting duties and taxes on food to limit inflation.
These are the initiatives laid out by the administration of Prime Minister Drew and aim to help the people.
