Dr Terrance Drew, the prime minister of St Kitts and Nevis, has extended an invitation to the youth of the country to provide their input in the development of the country. These suggestions will be instrumental to the upcoming budget debate.
The “Transformation to a Sustainable Island State: A Budget Conversation with the Nation’s Youth” discussion will be held at the St Kitts Marriott Resort on Wednesday, October 11, 2023.
The Prime Minister believes that the country’s youth is a significant part of the country’s future. In his most recent media interaction, he stated that young minds play an important role in sculpting the country’s future. Accordingly, in a historic move, the prime minister has announced that he would host a dialogue.
Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew stated that the interaction will help his government understand the views of the youth and take their suggestion. They will also be able to ensure that they can foster an environment where youth participation is encouraged in high-level government decisions.
Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew stated that this event is part of a series of dialogues he will be hosting ahead of the 2024 budget debate. The event will be held in December 2023. Further, the nation’s youth and leadership will discuss furthering national development as a Sustainable Island state.
A sustainable island state ideally stands on the following seven pillars:
- Water Security
- Energy Transition
- Food Security
- Sustainable Industry
- Sustainable Settlements
- Circular Economy And
- Social Protection
The government wants to focus on these pillars going forward on the development path. The approach aims to create a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future for the country. Accordingly, the administration can prioritize both environmental sustainability and socio-economic viability.
Additionally, Dr Terrance Drew believes that the country’s youth are not merely beneficiaries of the future but active architects in its making. Accordingly, the prime minister wants to ensure that the youth have every opportunity to participate in the dialogues of national development.
