Kaohsiung, Taiwan: Basseterre City in St. Kitts and Nevis and Kaohsiung City in Republic of China (Taiwan) have signed an agreement to become sister cities. The signing ceremony was held on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.
The ceremony took place at the city of Kaohsiung in Taiwan. The agreement is signed as a historic move to strengthen ties and encourage collaboration between the two nations.
The agreement was welcomed by the Mayor of the Kaohsiung City, Chi-Mai Chen. “This sister city partnership is a significant milestone in our shared journey towards mutual growth and development. It reflects our dedication to fostering closer ties and collaborative efforts across various sectors,” she underscored.
Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew expressed his passion for the agreement and said that this partnership is a testament to the commitment to mutual benefit and targeted exchanges. He also emphasized the significance of the agreement in achieving St. Kitts and Nevis’ vision of becoming a Sustainable Island State by 2040.
Remus Li-Kuo Chen, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Republic of China (Taiwan), also expressed his support for the agreement. “The establishment of the partnership between the two cities symbolizes our unwavering commitment to deepening our people’s bonds and will further strengthen the friendship between Taiwan and St. Christopher and Nevis,” he stated.
The Sister-City Partnership agreement aims to promote mutual understanding and cooperation among the countries across various fields that include culture, business, healthcare, and technology.
By encouraging the strengths of each city, the collaboration fosters economic growth, cultural exchange, and innovative development.
The Sister-City Partnership also includes initiatives to enhance healthcare in Basseterre through partnerships with Kaohsiung’s leading medical institutions.
The signing ceremony of the agreement was also attended the nationals of St. Kitts and Nevis living in Kaohsiung and by key delegations, including Donya Francis, St. Kitts and Nevis’ Resident Ambassador to the Republic of China (Taiwan). He outlined the importance of such alliances in encouraging economic benefits and stronger diplomatic relations.
The agreement represents a significant milestone in the relationship between Basseterre and Kaohsiung, leading towards a future filled with shared growth, innovation, and mutual prosperity.
