St Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew emphasised the importance of resilience, innovation, and sustainability in achieving agricultural sector development during his roundtable interview.
The government of St Kitts and Nevis main aim in modernizing agriculture is to enhance food production, reduce reliance on imports, and promote sustainable farming practices.
Moreover, St Kitts and Nevis continues to achieve their long-term goal of food security with the help of large investments despite challenges like drought, the twin island nation continues to advance its agricultural techniques.
PM Drew stated, “Drought has been a major obstacle, but we have responded with targeted programs, including the distribution of drip irrigation systems, seeds, and funding for drought recovery.”
The government of St Kitts and Nevis also invested in important infrastructure to ensure long-term agriculture productivity with construction of modern greenhouses, and a new hatchery has been launched to increase the capacity of producing eggs domestically.
They have also prioritized water security as a part of agricultural strategy, leading to plans for additional wells and expanded irrigation access, with a state-of-the-art desalination plant, expected later this year, to provide 2 million gallons of water daily to the Basseterre and surrounding areas.
Furthermore, many initiatives have been launched by the government of St Kitts and Nevis like the Tabasco program in hopes of diversifying agriculture and securing sustainable food production for coming generations.
Launch of Tabasco program
The St Kitts and Nevis Tabasco program was launched to increase local food production and promote sustainable agriculture, and has been yielding positive results since it was introduced.
Under this program, 100 acres of land has been given for the production of peppers and other crops, to produce more local food while making St Kitts and Nevis a supplier to international markets.
The program is a key component of St Kitts and Nevis’ government in transitioning the twin island nation to a country with large-scale, diversified farming.
Another reason to launch this program was to reduce reliance on imports while lessening the risks associated with environmental challenges like climate change.
Drought Recovery Program
Furthermore, the government of St Kitts and Nevis, under the leadership of PM Drew, also launched a drought recovery program to support local farmers, providing them with important resources like drip irrigation systems, protective crop coverings, and high quality seeds.
Millions of dollars were funded in this initiative and shows the government’s commitment in advancing and strengthening the agriculture sector.
