The reported homicides for the past few months have been reduced due to community outreach, targeted interventions, and a public health approach, PM Dr Terrance Drew said at a press conference on Thursday, March 6, 2025. He said that their ability to reduce violent crime proves that they don’t have to be corrupt to solve the country’s problems.
According to PM Drew, St Kitts and Nevis, together with law enforcement, community leaders, social services, and the private sector, can devise permanent solutions to the national issue, crime.
PM Dr Terrance Drew urged citizenry and residents of the Federation to partner with the government in making St Kitts and Nevis a safer nation for generations to come. He also said that working together could eliminate crime altogether.
PM Dr Terrance Drew also emphasized the continued efforts of the government to empower and strengthen communities and to promote social cohesion.
Crime prevention initiatives by the government
PM Drew highlighted that it is worth mentioning that the Citizen Security Advisory Council of the government continues to work with vulnerable communities by promoting preventive actions, education, and social intervention. This initiative has been critical to addressing the factors that lead to crime and the promotion of a peaceful and safe society.
The government of St Kitts and Nevis has also increased its investments and training in law enforcement technology and this too has contributed to a decrease in crime.
The government has put their emphasis on the recruitment and training of new police officers, equipping them with the necessary skills to operate and safeguard the Federation effectively.
The embracing of a public health strategy in crime has also been a driving factor in the country’s advancements in crime prevention.
The government has put measures in place to tackle the underlying social determinants of crime. By seeing violence as a public health issue, the efforts being made are leading to more sustainable outcomes.
