PM Dr Terrance Drew highlights significance of EU’s growing interest in green hydrogen

Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew highlighted the significance of the European Union’s (EU) growing interest in green hydrogen in the Caribbean region during a press conference on Thursday, March 6th, 2025, emphasizing the alignment with the nation’s Sustainable Island State Agenda.

He said that the government of St Kitts and Nevis is strategically working to position the nation to become a net exporter of renewable energy and to capitalize on the EU’s interest in green hydrogen.

PM Drew said during the press conference that the EU is interested in buying hydrogen from their region. He further added that not only will St Kitts and Nevis achieve energy independence, but will also have the potential to become an energy exporter that will create new economic opportunities for the people of the twin island nation.

Government’s investment in geothermal, solar, and wind energy projects

During the press conference, PM Drew said that the government of St Kitts and Nevis is increasing its investments in geothermal, solar, and wind energy projects while working in collaboration with key international partners, including the Saudi Fund for Development and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).

PM Dr Terrance Drew highlighted the importance of investing in renewable energy for the long-term resilience of the Federation’s economy. He added that this investment will help achieve energy security and will open doors to new revenue streams that will benefit the twin island nation for many years ahead.

PM Drew discusses various energy project

PM Dr Terrance Drew stated that they have secured full funding for the Nevis geothermal project, which will generate the island’s 50 – 60 megawatts of electricity approximately. 

He further added that this initiative will meet the domestic energy demands and will also facilitate energy exports to neighboring islands.

Moreover, the government of St Kitts and Nevis is advancing a 50 megawatt solar farm project in partnership with the Republic of China (Taiwan). This project will provide more favorable terms for the twin island nation.

PM Drew also said during the conference that the government has been advancing the plans for a wind energy project at Port Zante by installing cutting-edge wind turbines that are designed to withstand severe weather conditions.

He stated that these renewable energy projects will lower the electricity costs for the citizens and businesses while contributing to the Federation’s transformation toward energy sustainability.
