Honourable Lindsay Grant and the Minister of Education, the Honourable Jonel Powell in celebration of International Day of Sign Languages, visited the Centre for the Disabled on September 23, 2020.
Minister Powell was taught how to spell his name in sign language on this occasion. He said that this is often taken for granted.
He said that sometimes we take these things for granted; however, it is important for us to know these things.
Minister Powell said that he was very happy to see the deaf learning and impressed that they were able to teach him how to spell his name. He said that this shows they are doing very well.
He said that he was happy to celebrate International Day of Sign Languages along with the members of the Centre.
The Education Minister said that he is looking forward to working with the members and have them provide sign language services whenever the ministry makes future presentations.
Minister Grant was there to support his sister, who is deaf.
Grant shared that his sister went to a school for the deaf. He also said that he took in his sister’s first two children years ago who communicated mainly in sign language as both parents only signed.
They have left now and that he takes care care of his sister’s youngest now.
The theme for 2020 International Day of Sign languages is “Sign Languages Are for Everyone!”
