Minister of Public Infrastructure, Energy, and Utilities Konris Maynard joined the ‘Walk a Mile in My Shoe’ event, organized by the St Kitts and Nevis Association of Persons with Disabilities on December 08 2023. The event aimed to bring awareness to the lifestyle of people living with disabilities.
Minister Konris Maynard took to social media and highlighted that he walked the streets of Basseterre whilst blindfolded and also using a wheelchair.
Minister Konris Maynard noted, “It is a completely different perspective of life not to have access to all your senses and capabilities. We will continue to work through the Ministry of Aging and Disabilities to improve the lifestyle experience of anyone who may be differently abled”.
The event was hosted in recognition of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed annually on December 03.
Minister Maynard and other participants experienced first-hand the challenges persons with disabilities face.
Apart from Minister Konris Maynard, Junior Minister Isalean Philip also celebrated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
On the day she addressed the nation and highlighted that she was going to present a report which outlines how the government has decided to seek to improve the lives of people with disabilities.
The prime minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, also celebrated International Day of Persons with Disabilities. he had a heart-to-heart conversation with them, following the theme No one is left behind.”
He focused on Sustainable Development Goals and addressed several key issues.
which included
- improving housing options for people with disabilities,
- expanding job opportunities,
- revising building codes to improve accessibility,
- improving access to health care.
The government of St Kitts and Nevis is committed to improving the lives of people with disabilities,
Throughout the observation and celebration month of Persons with Disabilities, St Kitts and Nevis leaders emphasised that every human is initiated and should have the freedom to enjoy life without any obligations.
