Dr Terrance Drew, Samal Duggins and Isalean Phillip interacted with representatives of people with disabilities and organisations working with disabilities during a lunch and consultation session held at the Caribbean Conference Room of CUNA on Friday, November 24, 2023.
Prime Minister Dr Drew thanked the participants and reaffirmed the government’s commitment of improving the living conditions of people with disabilities. “One of the things we have done this year is to introduce [a measure] to have a sign language interpreter, someone who translates what is said into sign language, in Parliament or the Prime Minister’s speech,” said Dr Drew.
He highlighted that many deaf and hard-of-hearing people welcomed this development. “We must continue to do everything possible to ensure that you have as [low] barriers as possible to fulfil your societal obligations.” The prime minister added
Travia Douglas, Program Manager of the Disability Services Unit, gave a thought-provoking presentation on “The Sustainable Development Goals and People with Disabilities”.
His presentation was on the theme “No one is left behind”, and he focused on the Sustainable Development Goals and addressed several key issues.
which included
- improving housing options for people with disabilities,
- expanding job opportunities,
- revising building codes to improve accessibility,
- improving access to health care.
Devrone Connor, a wheelchair user, said today’s event was “very interesting” and wanted more jobs and training opportunities.
At the same time, Letitia Murray expressed how important it was for her to participate in discussions with senior government officials on issues that affect not only disabled people but the whole society. She praised the government’s initiative for creating a Ministry of Youth Empowerment, and the Disabled, specifically focusing on the challenges the disabled face.
Minister of State for Disability Affairs Isalean Phillip confirmed that the government will continue ongoing discussions with stakeholders. She also thanked several private sponsors and individuals for their continued cooperation with the department.
