St Kitts and Nevis: Following the budget presentation in St Kitts and Nevis parliament last week, there was talks about budget deficit. It led to comparison of economies in the previous tenures led by Dr Denzil Douglas and Dr Timothy Harris.
With the vision of growth and discipline, Labour under Dr Douglas had put major focus on the ways of diversifying economy and paving the developmental path for St Kitts and Nevis.
However, the journey encountered several challenges and difficulties as the Sugar Industry was in debt and there was a need to rise from that in attaining the service-based economy.
The Labour government implemented bold and unique reforms with an intent to enhance the economic conditions of St Kitts and Nevis.
With the steps and fiscal strategies, the national treasury was left with over $900 million with nearly half a billion contributed by the Sugar Industry Diversification Foundation (SIDF) Fund.
The steps have showcased that creative planning, and bold vision could lead to growth and sustainability even with deficit budgets. Dr Douglas noted that there is need to understand and implement strategic steps that could generate long-term benefits for the people of St Kitts and Nevis.
On the other hand, compared with PM Dr Timothy Harris led government started on the gains that were basically inherited from the administration of Dr Douglas. However, experts believe his ruthless steps drained the funds from SIDF, and the treasury was left with a mere $10 million when Dr Harris led Team Unity government left the office.
According to the records and reports, Dr Harris has used the funds from SIDF recklessly and abused the St Kitts and Nevis Development Bank, aiming to fulfill his claim of balanced budgets.
However, the consequences of these steps were faced by the entire country, resulting in eroding trust among the people and economic instability for common people.
Dr Denzil Douglas used the deficit budget and promoted the growing vision for the sustainable economy of the country, rather than playing tactics to wrong the citizens.
Dr Douglas added that good governance can make the deficit budget useful, while bad politics can turn the stable budget into instability. It is important to maintain the prosperity of the nation with great transparency and economy.
Similarly, this year’s budget was presented with deficit but it will have long term benefits for the people of St Kitts and Nevis.
