Drewzy crowned new monarch with 830 points at Carib Senior Calypso Monarch

Drewzy has emerged as the winner with a total of 830 points during the Carib Senior Calypso Monarch competition held during the Sugar Mas 53.

Big Lice was the first runner up with 808 points, with Queen Independent being the second runner up with 783 points.

The finale was held on Friday, December 27, 2024, at the Carnival Village, hosted by Short Pants, with 8 Calypsonians and had 2 rounds.

The event started with the National Anthem and after a short introduction, the judging criteria was announced which was 30 points for lyrics, 30 points for music and 30 points for performance, and 10 points for originality.

There were seven finalists, Big Lice, Drewzy, Lady Carens, Queen Kibi, Issa Kamal, Queen Singing Jackie, and Lady Diva, who competed against the reigning monarch Queen Independent.

Queen Independent was the winner and crowned monarch of last year’s Carib Senior Calypso Monarch held during Sugar Mas 52, who became the second runner up this year.

Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew was also present at the event and Minister of Creative Economy Samal Duggins, handed the trophies to the winners.

The second runner up Queen Independent received a cash prize of $12,000 from the National Carnival Committee, while the first runner up Big Lice got a cash prize of $15,000.

Drewzy became the winner and was crowned as the new monarch, receiving a cash prize of $20,000 from the National Carnival Committee.

Finalists who didn’t win any position, received a cash prize of $4000 EC and the participation gift from the committee.

Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew congratulated all the participants along with the winner and the two runner ups of the show.

He shared a post on his Facebook page that he had a great time on the show and congratulated all the participants, and the winner King Drewzy and runner-up Big Lice and Queen Independent.

Minister of Creative Economy Samal Duggins also congratulated the winner with a Facebook post sharing that with powerful performances of “We Need a New Deal” and “Peace to Pieces”, King Drewzy earned the victory with his brilliance.

Minister Samal Duggins also shared that this year’s competition was a testament to the enduring power of calypso as a voice for the people, while congratulating the calypsonians for keeping the culture alive.
