Phillip Davis won the general elections in the Bahamas and became the new Prime Minister of the country. Fred Mitchell, the chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party Fred Mitchell, stated that the new government of the Bahamas would work efficiently.
Davis is 70 years old and was sworn into the office on Friday during a private ceremony held at the Governor-General office. Davis took the party towards a triumphing victory in general elections. He won 32 seats in the Bahamas out of 39 seats.
Chairman of PLP Mitchell said that before the general election, he was in contact with the Commissioner of Police and also with Government House as he asked them about the arrangements for an arranged shift from the current government to the fresh government.
Mitchell said, “In our system, as you know…as soon as the election results are finalized by the public officials, in this case, the Parliamentary Commissioner. A letter is written to the Governor-General to advise him of the winner, and the Governor-General then writes a letter to invite the Prime Minister-designate to form a government. It is my hope that as soon as possible, the government will be put in place and certainly not beyond Saturday.
Davis, who sold himself during the campaign as a formidable leader in stark contrast to an out of his depth then prime minister Dr Hubert Minnis now faces some formidable challenges in office due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and its continuing health and economic impact.
The country has been rebuilding from the impact that was posed in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian in 2019. The hurricane is said to be the strongest on the record, which caused a large number of fatalities and killed a total of 74 people, and many went missing.
The Ministry of Finance informed that the national debt had reached US$10.356 billion while being by the end of June 2021. Additionally, they said that $951 million fiscal deficit for 2021-2022.
