An ethics committee to be formed by the Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Association (SLMDA). The main objective of this committee would be to choose whom to give health care when the health facilities in St Lucia would remain full with COVID-19 cases.
SLMDA President Dr Merle Clarke stated that the island has been recording triple-digit numbers of COVID-19 new cases on a daily basis, out of them, many are critical. St Lucia has been fighting with the 4th wave of the pandemic that was started in past July.
From March 2020, St Lucia had registered over 10,000 COVID-19 cases earlier this week. Till date, 129 deaths have been recorded due to COVID-19 on the island.
Dr Clarke declared said, “The reality of that is with the surge in COVID-19, this may very well become inevitable here. To a certain extent, this is done daily in hospitals, particularly in hospitals with limited resources. Medical professionals have to determine whether a patient is an ICU candidate. And that’s under normal circumstances is this patient, for example, the best candidate for dialysis when you have limited resources. So we had improved for the most part in that regard, but with this current surge, we are going back to that situation.”
The SLMDA President sadly said that it is not acceptable what the citizens have been doing during this COVID-19 outbreak. The citizens should obey the COVID-19 safety protocols and protect themselves against the COVID-19 virus infection. At this time, the facilities are full of the COVID-19 positive cases, and the employees are stressed and exhausted.
Dr Clarke said that the citizens should remember that this is not just a matter of the hospitals being crowded with the COVID-19 positive cases. On the other hand, the citizens should think that if this situation would occur on the island, then how many patients requiring care and healthcare services would also get impacted.
SLMDA also urged the citizens of the island to get vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus. As not only the family of the infected patient get affected but also the person who is taking their care at facilities also get affected.
