Al-Sahrawi had claimed his direct involvement in the 2017 attack in Niger that resulted in fatalities of four U.S. military personnel and four people with Niger’s military.
His group also has kidnapped foreigners in the Sahel and is still holding American Jeffrey Woodke, who was kidnapped from his residence in Niger in 2016.
Adnan Abu Walid al-Sahrawi led the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), a jihadist group that split away from other militants in Mali in 2015 when it swore loyalty to the I.S.
