Passenger Vessel Apple Syder, which was travelling from St Kitts to Nevis experienced some difficulties at sea and raised an SOS call. The officials have confirmed that shortly after the SOS call was made, the rescue operation began.
The vessel sank in the sea however due to timely intervention and support from another vessel, the people were rescued safely. The vessel had 41 passengers and 6 members of crew at the time of the incident.
Notably, The MV Apple Syder left Charlestown, Nevis earlier in the morning of Monday, June 29 with passengers. After the passengers from Charlestown had disembarked and Charlestown-bound passengers were onboard the vessel departed the ferry terminal of Basseterre around 8:55 A.M.
The videos which are circulating online suggest that the vessel experienced some difficulties at sea shortly after the vehicle left Basseterre. Some other videos on social media show rescue efforts beginning.
Notably, all the passengers who were onboard the vessel have been successfully rescued and remain safe. In the aftermath of the incident, a national investigation has been started in the matter. The officials have shared that agencies including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, The St. Christopher Air & Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA), the Coast Guard unit of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, the Ministry of National Security, and the Maritime Division have come together
The investigation will center on the cause of the disturbance which resulted in the sinking of the ship. As the Minister of Health and National Security, Dr Drew is expected to lead the investigation.
According to some sources, Dr Drew has been constantly in contact with the Commander of the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force and other officers as the rescue operation took place. Notably, Dr Drew has also confirmed through his social media that the passengers of MV Apple Syder are safe.
He extended gratitude to the gods for the safety of the people. At the same time, he also appreciated the quick response of the emergency response teams, hospital staff, and civilians who supported the rescue efforts.
