The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew announced that they have recorded zero maternal deaths in the country in the year 2026. According to the Prime Minister, this is a massive achievement for the nation.
The Prime Minister said that this is proof that the healthcare sector of the country is on the right track and getting stronger and more responsive. The Prime Minister made the announcement during the National Assembly Sitting which was held on Thursday.
Dr Drew, who handles the responsibility for the Ministry of Health, was proud of the achievement of the Healthcare sector of the country. He highlighted that the healthcare sector is proud to announce that not one woman who has carried life within her has died this year.
The Maternal mortality is a very important indicator of the strength of the healthcare sector of the country. The Minister has shared that this is proof that is acknowledged and seen all over the world.
The development has also improved the reputation of the people of the island nation.
The Prime Minister has given the credit of this achievement to the people of the island who have worked in the healthcare sector. He thanked the doctors, the nurses, staff members at the various healthcare institutions in the country for their support in achieving this mandate.
The Minister has shared that the mothers who are giving birth on the island have to feel safe, as such, the office of the Prime Minister has established the high risk preganancy funds.
The Prime Minister said that the fund allows women who are going through high risk pregnancies to access resources that they need. The Minister that if a mother is in need of support she should have access to said support.
Dr Drew also noted that “when you have a healthcare system who ensures that all pregnant women would have access to healthcare, that says that your healthcare system, though not perfect, is strong and robust”
The leadership of the St Kitts and Nevis has also urged the people of the country to take up a healthier lifestyle.
