The federal cabinet of St Kitts and Nevis, led by Dr Terrance Drew commemorated History and Heritage Month on February 9, 2025. The leaders and members of the government were dressed in Afro-Caribbean attire to mark the occasion.
The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrrance Drew, Deputy Prime Minister Dr Geoffrey Hanley, Minister of Public Utilities, et al, Konris Maynard, Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, et al, Marsha Henderson, Minister of Foreign Affairs, international trade, et al, Dr Denzil Douglas, Minister of Creative Economy, Agriculture, et al, Samal Duggins, Minister of Environment and Constituency Empowerment, et al, Joyelle Clarke Junior Minister of Gender Affairs, Ageing and Disabilities, Isalean Phillip, gathered together in their traditional attires for the commemoration of the day.
The History and Heritage Month is an opportunity for the members of the community to take the time to honor and celebrate their history and their roots. The commemoration also served as an opportunity for the people of St Kitts and Nevis to make sure that the future generations of the country are aware and educated regarding the developments which have taken place in the country.
The members of the community have the responsibility to inform the younger generations of the country and understand the resilience of the people who came before them. The government of St Kitts and Nevis asserted that the story of their histories is not only crucial for their own development, but for the shared growth of the world.
The government of St Kitts and Nevis firmly believes in respecting their roots and their history. The notion gets further solidified in the fact that they are pursuing closer relationships between the Caribbean and Africa.
The nation has been looking forward to bringing the African nations, Caribbean states and the wider diaspora closer together. The closer relationship between the two regions will help strengthen solidarity, deepen integration.
The two regions have to work collectively to make fight for reparations and reparatory justice. The leaders from both the regions have to make use of a comprehensive transcontinental framework to achieve this mandate.
In addition to the federal cabinet of the country, the Ambassadors Leon Natta-Nelson and Kenneth Douglas were also part of the History and Heritage Month commemoration. The Ambassadors were also dressed in traditional Afro Caribbean attires to celebrate the occasion.
On the same day, Dr Terrance Drew also reflected on the heroes of Buckley’s Uprising. He also reiterated that the day will be celebrated as a national holiday, starting 2027. The day is another proof of the nation’s resilience and strength for resisting oppression.
