The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis has extended his condolences and sympathies to the government and people of Colombia after the nation was hit by a devastating earthquake. Dr Terrance Drew took to his social media to extend his condolences on the loss of life and property in the aftermath of the natural calamity.
The Prime Minister especially expressed his sorrows to the people who have lost family in this tragic incident. The earthquake struck Western Colombia on Monday and has caused significant damage within the affected areas.
The officials have shared that the epicenter was near San José del Palmar in Chocó, about 240 kilometres west of Bogotá. The earthquake has led to collapse of several buildings within the affected areas. The death toll has soared past 160 in the last few hours and the rescue efforts have been ongoing.
The rescue efforts have entered their second day. The officials have shared that the rescue teams have been digging into the rubble for any survivors.
The number of injured persons has not been made public and is not confirmed. Dr Terrance Drew has reflected on the condition within Colombia and highlighted that the people of St. Kitts and Nevis are constantly praying for the people stuck in the earthquake. Dr Drew said, “Our thoughts and prayers are also with those who have been injured, those who have lost their homes,”
He also applauded the emergency personnel and rescue teams who have been working tirelessly to save lives and bring assistance to affected communities. The Prime Minister has highlighted that this is a very difficult time for the people of Colombia.
He said that, “At this very difficult time, the people of St. Kitts and Nevis stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Colombia. We pray for strength for the grieving, healing for the injured, and safety for all those impacted in the days ahead.”
