The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew spoke with the members of the media about the new developments that the nation as well as the region. During the July edition of the Roundtable, Dr Drew talked about his tenure as the Chairman of the CARICOM and highlighted how his tenure at the helm of the regional organisation reaffirmed the region’s commitment to continue working together,
Dr Drew, who was the Chairperson of the CARICOM for the first half of the year, during which a record number of regional leaders came to St kitts and Nevis to reaffirm their commitment to Caribbean Unity,
He was proud to announce that all the full time members of the CARICOM Heads of Government were present at the event. Such a historic milestone was achieved for the first time in over a decade. Dr Terrance Drew said, I’m very proud of leading CARICOM at the end of my tenure. He highlighted that during his tenure there was never a question about the survivability of CARICOM.
Dr Drew said, “I’m very, very proud of all the leaders of CARICOM. I’m thankful that they were able to declare to the region, and to their various countries, irrespective of the differences which will always exist, that CARICOM remains extremely, extremely strong and that they are committed to the cause of CARICOM.”
The Prime Minister also talked about being selected to chair a committee on Rastafarian Rights. He highlighted that he will put together a task force to really examine and report on the issues faced by the community.
According to Dr Drew, he will reach out to the University of the West Indies and other experts to examine the plight of Rastafarians in the Caribbean and across the world. Dr Drew confirmed that they have received letters from Rastafarian groups from across the world citing discrimination and so forth.
“We want to look closely at that so that CARICOM can address these matters. This is a very, very important development that the Rastafari community will get this type of attention to address any issues that they might be facing, that must be dealt with so that they can be incorporated fully in the communities wherever they are found, and especially in the Caribbean, where the Rastafari movement was formed and developed.”
The Prime Minister highlighted the growth of the economy of the country fueled by creation of jobs in construction and agriculture. The Prime Minister also highlighted positive growth of the creative sector fueled by the St Kitts Music Festival, which happened last month.
During the roundtable, Dr Terrance Drew also announced that the Social Security had the highest number of contributors ever recorded. More than 30,000 people have made contributions into the social security fund of St Kitts and Nevis leading to a surplus in Social Security.
He highlighted that the administration has subsidized gasoline in cars, cooking gas, water and food prices to support the people of the island. The Minister announced due to the measures taken by the government, the people are saving upwards of 1 Million Dollars.
