School Mental Health Literacy Training Workshop was hosted at the Behavioural Health and Wellness Center in Nevis. The workshop was meant to inform and ready the educators dealing with children on a daily basis to learn about children’s mental health.
In the previous months, Nevis has seen significant growth and development in the mental health sector. The officials have shared that the education and healthcare authorities are both dedicated towards making sure the mental health of the children is given the attention that they deserve.
The officials have shared that the workshop was attended by deputy principals, guidance counsellors and education officers. The aim of the project is to make sure that the mental health and education are given equal importance
The officials have shared that the workshop was organized to make sure that the stakeholders understand how they can support the children and adolescents in their mental health struggles and individual journeys.
The participants were given the opportunity to access professional understanding of the cases with individual case based discussion The training during the workshop touched ion topics such as ADHD, Depressive Disorders.
Afterwards, Ivorcia Browne, the councillor of the counselling unit led a session on conduct disorders. They discussed developmental and environmental factors that influence student behaviour. The officers discussed how the expression of emotions is different in adults and children.
The officers have shared that cultural sensitivity is important for the people of the island officers. They attendants of the event discussed various stories regarding the mental health of students and shared their experiences.
The Taiwan embassy officers shared their motivation for supporting the workshop project. They have shared that there is a reason behind every child’s behavioral patterns and behind every emotion there is a story. The initiative was supported by the Republic of China (Taiwan) supporting the development of the country.
The embassy was delighted to share that it is important for the people of the island should understand how to support children as they learn to navigate their emotions in a safe and productive manner.
