Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew addressed the members of the St Kitts and Nevis Defence Force (SKNDF) on the commemoration of 59 years to the events of June 10, 1967. During his address of the SKNDF officers, he applauded the critical role played by the forces in foiling the attempted coup on the Robert L Bradshaw administration.
On June 10, the St Kitts and Nevis Defence Force also unveiled their new digital combat uniform. PM Drew expressed his pride in being part of the launch of the new uniform.
He spoke of the significance of the new clothes during his address at the official launch parade and ceremony. He asserted that the uniforms are made for the real work of the armed forces which they do on the land, in the air and the seas.
He expressed his pride on the role that the armed forces of the country have played in defending the nation over the course of several decades.
Prime Minister and Minister of National Security has shared that the events of June 10, 2026 highlight that even though they are small, the SKNDF has protected the country from people who meant the nation harm.
During the address, PM Drew made a reference to the attempted predawn attack and attempt to overturn a democratically elected government. Dr Drew recalled that the attack, planned and executed by some individuals, also included the plans to attack some critical infrastructure within the country.
He was proud to note that these individuals were not able to succeed in their plans because they has underestimated both the people of the country and the determination of the security forces of St Kitts and Nevis. Dr Drew proudly stated that the plot failed due to the work of the armed forces of the country who were able to defend the island against the attack.
The Minister of National Security said that “June 10 was one of the most defining moments in the nation’s history.” He said that the importance of June 10 is not only for what happened nearly 6 decades ago, but it is also a reminder that every generation must remain committed to protecting the nation’s democratic institutions and preserving the freedoms secured by those who came before.
“The strength of our country is not measured in square miles. It is measured in the spine of the men and women who refuse to let it fall.”
PM Drew paid tribute to the members of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, describing them as the modern-day custodians of the legacy of the nation. He called them the living embodiment of the values that defeated the attempted coup nearly six decades ago.
